Woman Feeling Joyful in a field with mountains | Find Your Purpose in Life

I understand because I have been there.  I was on a mission to figure out what I needed to do in order to feel passion and a sense of purpose in life.  I had this feeling that something was missing, and I was meant for more.

I worked on myself and my vision big time the past few years. I went from working a corporate job that I dreaded, to being a stay at home mom, owning my own boutique & blog, along with being an actress. So yeah, big changes!

I wanted to feel like I was thriving, not surviving.  And I wanted to do things in life that lit me up.

I will share with you the things that helped me get there, and find my purpose and passion in life.

This wasn't always an easy journey, and I definitely had moments when I wanted to quit. But connecting with these principles helped me to keep going, and ultimately find what I was looking for.

1) TUNE INTO YOUR FEELINGS

We want passion, meaning and purpose in our life in order to feel a certain way. That is what it boils down to.

If I _______, then I will feel _______ (fill in the blank).  It’s the IF, THEN mentality.

  • If I get this JOB, then I will feel FULFILLED.
  • If I MADE MORE MONEY, then I will feel ABUNDANT.
  • If my KIDS WOULD LISTEN, then I will feel LESS STRESSED (I still feel this at times...haha!)
  • If I HAD MORE TIME, then I would FEEL MORE IN CONTROL and DO MORE.

Think about it. Does any of this sound familiar?  It's how we all operate, even though we may not realize it.

We tend to think about what we need in order to feel a certain way. That by reaching some goal, or checking something off of our to-do list, we will suddenly get to that happy place.

But that’s not how it works.  We see this with people that have every material possession you could imagine in the world, and have achieved great successes in their life, but are still not truly happy. I’m sure you can think of a few celebrities that fit into that category. And I’m sure you also have friends or family members that seem to have it all, and are not content with their life.

It all comes down to your feelings.  And starting with them first.

So take some time to think about how you want to feel in life.  Do you want to feel connected, joyful, peaceful, empowered, free? You get the idea.

The book, The Desire Map really helped me to dig into how I ultimately want to feel in my life.  So if you want some guidance, I definitely recommend you check it out!  Click here to find it on Amazon.*

2) SHOW UP LIKE YOU’VE ALREADY REACHED YOUR DESTINATION

Once you know how you want to feel, you are in a really great place.  That is the foundation for creating anything you want in your life!

As the next step, you need to start working to show up that way. This is the part that sounds easy, but definitely takes some time and work.

Here’s the big secret.  You don't need to accomplish something to feel a certain way. It is already inside you.

So for example, let’s say you want to feel more joy in your life. Do your best to incorporate that feeling of joy into your every day.  What you focus on grows.

I will give you an example of how I did this with my morning routine, since this is something all of us do. Some of us have kids, and some don't, so just visualize it with your reality.

I’m a stay at home mom, so kids are a big part of my existence.  I’ve worn many hats in my life, and it is by far the hardest job I’ve ever had.  If you want a good read about my stay at home mom life, check out this blog post I wrote.

Sometimes I struggled with enjoying my day to day mom responsibilities.  And I felt lost, not knowing who I was and what I wanted out of life.  This practice of discovering my core feelings, and showing up with those feelings, really helped me to become a better mom and person in general.  You can apply this to any aspect of your life.

When I wake up, I practice gratitude, and think about all the reasons I have to be joyful right now. I also think about what I have to look forward to that day. Even if they are small moments - like taking some time for myself and doing my morning meditation, making a coffee (and savoring every sip), and enjoying the quiet sounds of nature outside (if I can get up before my kids of course!).

Or bigger events like celebrating something I've accomplished, or a special occasion with a friend or family member.  No matter what is going on in your life, there is always something you can be grateful for. Find those things and focus on them.

When my family wakes up, I think about how I’m grateful and lucky to have them.  And yes, I know there are days when your family can irritate your last nerve, but just stay with me here and keep walking through the process.  There was a day when we wished for what we have right now.  Even in the moments when its total madness, it's still a blessing.  No matter how tired I am, or what project got interrupted when the kids woke up (as a side note, I try and get up 1 hour earlier every day so I can have some "me time"), I just keep focusing on the joy.

I always do my best to greet them in the morning with joy.  Having a smile on my face when they wake up and wish me a good morning.  And believe me, this was super hard when I was a sleep deprived mama!  I had days when I felt cranky, and just wanted to roll back over in bed. But I kept focusing on the joy.

Now it’s just my normal routine, and I do wake up with happiness in my heart everyday.  I’ve come a long way from the feelings that I used to have.  And don’t misunderstand, not everyday is perfect. And I still have my moments.  It’s important to remember that there is no such thing as perfect, and doing our best is enough.

As my day goes on, I bring joy to the little things.  Making my kids breakfast or lunch and getting them set up for the day.  I would remind myself that when I was going to do a job, I'd try to do it the best that I could.   As a mom, your day can be super monotonous, but I promise you, when you focus on the joy, it grows!

So I encourage you to start showing up the way that you want, and things will start to become clearer to you.  You will be living your vision, and that is when you really start attracting amazing things into your life!

I’ve done a lot of training with mindfulness, and there is so much more to talk about and learn, but those are some basic principles that you can start implementing today.

Decide how you want to feel, create that within you, and then enjoy life experiences feeling that way!

3) STAY THE COURSE, LEARN MORE AND KEEP GROWING!
